Devmate
At the end of 2024, I returned to Meta’s infrastructure organization to answer a broad question: how could AI help Meta and its employees move faster than the competition?
I was asked to lead the effort and moved into a design lead manager role. The job was not to refine an existing product; it was to define the product, align leadership, create the team, and build enough of the system to prove the direction.
Define AI productivity for engineering
I framed Devmate as an AI product for Meta’s engineering organization: a developer experience that could help with real work inside the tools engineers already used, supported by a broader hub and product system.
The direction connected product strategy, model capability, and interaction design. It gave several teams a shared answer to what we were building and what would make it meaningfully different from a generic coding assistant.
Turn the direction into an organizational goal
I presented the direction to Boz and Mark and secured their buy-in. That support led to new organization goals for 2025 and the creation of teams responsible for turning the proposal into a product.
This was the critical design-leadership work: making the future specific enough that executives could commit to it, while leaving the product teams enough room to learn as the technology evolved.
Create the product and the design capability together
I grew the design team to three people and led work across the product experience, mobile concepts, the IDE surface, and a new design system. We were building both a product and the language needed to keep several surfaces coherent.
- Devmate in VS Code for work inside the editor
- Devmate Hub as the broader product destination
- A shared design system for the new family of AI tools
Ship, learn, and carry the work forward
We shipped Devmate in VS Code, where it became the fastest-growing internal product at the time. By mid-2025, the organization moved into Meta Superintelligence Labs, and I brought the people, product thinking, and technical work back into Metamate.
The result was larger than a single launch: Devmate created an aligned product direction, a new team, and a set of capabilities that could continue inside the next generation of Meta’s internal AI workspace.
